The cultivation of this plant typical to the Amazon region has changed the reality of several families in the Jari Valley. Curauá (Ananas erectifolius) may become another economic development model for eastern Amazonian communities.
In the implementation phase, Fundação Orsa is responsible for seedling multiplication, selection of participating families, technical advice and supporting the trade of the fibers.
The crops are grown by the communities in degraded areas. The same communities are also responsible for the first treatment of the curauá leaves, where the fibers are extracted from the leaves.
Curauá crop is particularly interesting because of its environmentally friendly cultivation and its fiber properties: biodegradable, lightweight, four times stronger than sisal fiber and ten times less expensive than fiberglass. It can be used in automotive components and other industrial applications. It is both a profitable and environmentally correct solution implemented in the middle of the Amazon region.
This project promotes human development, professional qualification and encourages cooperatives for adolescents and young adults in the age of 14 to 24 years old.
COPP provides training and assistance in the following subjects: agricultural crops; management of non-timber products (Pacuí Agricultural Family School); Carpentry (Wood School); computer skills (Digital Inclusion School) and professional apprenticeship – according to the Apprenticeship Law (Apprentice Generation).
This project promotes the social and economic emancipation of mothers in the Jari Valley.
One of the principal results of this project is the creation of AMARTE – Associação das Mulheres Mães Artesãs (Association of Craft Women). This is an association that manufactures jewelry and accessories using seeds and other natural resources.
The Security Agents from Jari Celulose oversee an area of 1.3 million hectares in the states of Pará and Amapá. While carrying out their basic activities they are in contact with 3,000 families living in riverside and forest communities. Combining their professional activities with a strong sense of voluntarism, they make periodic visits to low-income families and instruct them in health, first aid, basic sanitation and nutrition. The work includes information about vaccination and breastfeeding for families with newborns.
Since its startup, in 2003, Orsa Florestal incorporates the principles of social and environmental responsibility. This commitment echoes into three directions: responsibility towards the external stakeholders, the internal stakeholders and the environment.
The company respects very much communities and their relation with the forest. For example, due to the use of the pequia fruit for local dweller feed, the species is only cropped beyond three kilometers away from the communities.
In addition, the andiroba and copaiba species have never been cropped by Orsa Florestal because from those trees some phyto-therapeutical oils are produced and used in traditional medicine. The rights for subsistence hunting and extraction are also granted to the people of the forest.
Whenever possible, investments carried by Orsa Florestal are also used in the benefit of local people. For example, numerous roads built by the company for its forest operations are used by the native population. The road that currently connects Almeirim to Monte Dourado, was initially implemented for lumber transportation. Safer than its predecessor, it became the main road between the municipality and its main district.
The company´s responsibility towards its workers is guaranteed via the training and security program, accomplishment of the labor legislation and extensive channels of internal communications. Every early morning, the leaders advise their teams towards adopting security procedures according to working conditions (Daily Security Dialog – DSD). Besides information, personal protection equipment are major allies for avoiding accidents. Field and saw-mill team workers wear boots, helmets, gloves, uniforms, goggles, as well as other protection equipment, according to specific functions. Company vehicles communicate among them, as well as with central office, via radio, to provide prompt attendance to workers, in case of accidents.
The Grupo Orsa´s results, goals and challenges are shared all through the organization via annual report, internal brochure so called “Planeta Orsa”, not to mention the frequent meetings attended by workers, managers and directors.
Regarding natural resources, Orsa Florestal adopts important actions to avoid or to alleviate the impact to environment. At the forest level practices such as detailed planning of roads and yards, awareness about road width; erosion control and road recuperation help to preserve the soil and the vegetation. Bridges and piping assure water flows their natural course.
One other Orsa Florestal commitment towards the Amazon region is related to cleared areas with over 200 m², which are recovered by planting native species, grown in own nurseries.
Selective garbage collection is a practice adopted either by foresters, either by industrial team.
Apart of that, Orsa Florestal joins Jari Celulose and Fundação Orsa in the effort of helping to change the local reality, which had a substantial social liability: urban conglomerates without basic infrastructure, fragile public policies and families facing misery and violence.
Along almost 8 years, more than R$ 40 million were invested in local social development projects by Grupo Orsa.
Orsa Florestal exercises on an every day basis the principles of responsible forest operation and believes that sustainable development can be only met through the balance among business, environment and people.
